How to Make the Perfect Scone
Scones are delicious treats that can be enjoyed with breakfast, tea,
coffee, or even for dessert. Of course, you can buy scones at your local
baker or grocery, but it is much more fulfilling to make them at home.
Plus, making your own scones is not hard at all.
There are countless recipes for making scones, but all of them
involve virtually the same step-by-step process. Once you master this,
you can make scones anytime you want.

- Before you start mixing your ingredients, you’ll want to preheat
your oven. This ensures even heating and accurate cooking time.
- Next, prepare your baking pan. You’ll want to cook your scones
on a clean, metal baking sheet that’s been lightly brushed with oil
to prevent sticking.
- Now, it’s time to sift your dry ingredients. Usually, scones
involve some type of flour and baking powder, but other ingredients
may be asked for as well.
- When your recipe calls for butter, make sure it has time to sit
so it can reach room temperature. The, chop it into small pieces so
that, when mixed with your dry ingredients, it achieves a crumbly
consistency.
- In a separate bowl, combine any wet ingredients in your recipe.
- Now, to combine wet and dry, start by making a small depression
in the center of your dry ingredient bowl. Slowly add the wet
ingredients, leaving some in the wet bowl for the moment.
- Use a knife, rather than a spoon, to combine your wet and dry
ingredients. This ensures you won’t over-stir the dough. As you mix
the liquid into the flour, pay attention to the consistency. The
dough should come together in small pieces without becoming too
moist. For this reason, you may not end up using the wet ingredients
you have left over. However, if the dough seems to dry, feel free to
add the remaining liquid.
- Grab all of your dough and place it on a cutting board or other
clean surface. Then, lightly knead the dough for approximately half
a minute. Any longer than this and you risk overworking the dough.
- Press your down into a single, round disk approximately 2
centimeters thick. You may want to use a rolling pin to help you do
this.
- Next, use a dedicated scone cutter (basically a round cookie
cutter) to cut out individual scones from your dough. Place each
scone onto the baking sheet leaving space to allow some expansion
during cooking.
- Glaze your scones according to recipe directions. If your recipe
does not specify how to glaze, simply use some milk and brush it
along the scone tops.
- Bake your scones until they have risen and are golden brown on
top.
- If you enjoy soft scones, wrap them in a damp towel as they
cool. If you want crispier treats, cool your scones on a wire rack.
- Enjoy right away, or freeze for up to three months.
